5 stunning places to visit with Firefly Airlines

Now flying from Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Firefly Airlines is proud to serve 18 regional cities, including destinations such as Indonesia and Singapore. However, there are also new additions to the family coming soon, allowing more budget travellers to expand their adventures. Without further ado, here are our picks for the 5 stunning spots to visit with Firefly Airlines.

Cebu, PHILIPPINES

As the second-largest city of the Philippines, the City of Cebu is often referred to as “the Queen City of the South”. With plenty of surprising things to see, do, and even taste for every kind of traveller who visits, it’s easy to see why this urban gem has become an increasingly popular destination. And soon, you’ll be able to fly to Cebu with Firefly Airlines, as they will be operating up to 15 flights weekly from KLIA.

Water-loving adventurers will definitely love heading into Oslob, where you’ll have the opportunity to swim with the largest fish in the world, whale sharks. Numerous excursions set off into the sea early in the morning on a paddle boat, and you’ll arrive at the designated snorkel area before you ever realise it. For many, this rare moment to come up close and personal with these gentle giants is one to cherish, making for an unforgettable vacation that will go down in history.

While in Cebu, you shouldn’t skip trying the local favourite known as lechon. Readily available anywhere you turn in town, these roasted suckling pigs are known for their juicy and tender meat that pairs perfectly with their perfectly caramelised skin.

The dish itself is seasoned with herbs such as lemongrass, garlic, and chives, creating a unique aroma as it roasts over an open fire. To cut through the oiliness, many locals enjoy their serving of lechon with puso, a type of rice cake that’s made by wrapping rice in woven coconut leaves.

Krabi, THAILAND

The region of Krabi needs no introduction when it comes to becoming a gorgeous holiday destination. With miles of stunning beaches, a variety of hiking routes, and endless viewpoints for you to soak in the beauty of its surrounding islands, it’s easy to see why everyone chooses this Thai destination for their short and sweet escapade. And with Firefly Airlines introducing up to 15 weekly flights starting from the 17th of November, you can discover so much of Krabi too!

Famed for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic backdrops of natural limestone cliffs, the island group of Phi Phi Islands is perhaps what most people know about Krabi. Diving enthusiasts would also grasp at every opportunity to hit the waters here, as you’ll be rewarded with the island’s rich marine life, including sea turtle spotting and swimming beside reef sharks.

For those seeking a night out, the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don, where the night keeps going with the endless beachfront bars and restaurants, is where you’ll want to be. Movie buffs will also recognise the iconic Maya Bay featured in the 2000 thriller, The Beach. While it’s open to all who wish to walk in the footsteps of the leading actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, swimming is restricted on this island to help protect the corals and marine life.

If beaches and the water aren’t your thing, then perhaps a climb up over 1,200 steps will grind your gears. The Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tahm Suea is Krabi’s most popular Buddhist temple, offering panoramic views of the region following the steep climb. Intricate carvings of a tiger that had previously resided in the cave remain on display here, and you’ll also see a massive Buddha statue up top. Do note that plenty of monkeys now call the temple home, and they’re known to be cheeky with stealing food and drinks from visiting guests.

Siem Reap, CAMBODIA

Set in Cambodia, Siem Reap is a beautiful city graced with plenty of lush greenery and rich in culture. Its most popular attraction is none other than the Angkor Wat, a Hindu-Buddhist temple that received the UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1992. But beyond the largest religious structure in the world, there’s so much more of Siem Reap waiting to be uncovered from the moment you set foot in the city.

And as Firefly Airlines’ newest destination with 15 weekly flights starting from the 17th of November, you’ll be able to set off on your adventure to see them all.

In Siem Reap, you’ll find that the lotus flowers are often used in a variety of things, including food, home goods, and even clothes. So, what better way to see this iconic plantation than a visit to the Lotus Silk Farm? Set just 30 minutes away from the city centre, this interesting hotspot allows visitors to roam about with zero commitments and for free. However, paid tours and workshops are also available for anyone keen to learn more about the flowers. It’s a unique experience to try out in Cambodia, and we do recommend visiting it at least once.

To bring home a piece of Siem Reap with you, be sure to visit the artisan Made in Cambodia Market. Created to support the Help Create Khmer Jobs initiative, this is where you’ll find the most thoughtful, handmade items at reasonable prices without the hassle of street haggling. From home goods made out of recycled plastic to one-of-a-kind jewellery made from recycled brass bullets and sterling silver, the Made in Cambodia Market is a shopper’s paradise where you can buy without worries.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot the local Cambodian circus, Phare, performing by the market. This contemporary troupe is known to bring together traditional and modern circus arts, carving a unique style of storytelling that blends drama, dance, and live music. Having supported the market since its inception in 2013, the troupe’s surprise performance often leaves guests wanting more and drums up the adrenaline for vendors and tourists alike.

Singapore

If you’re looking for a quick escape outside of Malaysia, why not consider our friendly neighbour, Singapore? This small yet urban country often features a variety of exciting activities that await, and you’ll be surprised at just how much fun you’ll have when you fly in via Firefly Airlines.

Whether it’s walking down the iconic Marina Bay Sands to relive your “Crazy Rich Asian” moment or popping over to Gardens by the Bay to marvel at the thematic displays, Singapore has always been home to interesting experiences that you won’t find elsewhere. If you’re in the area early, be sure to check out the ArtScience Museum, where the futuristic exhibitions are ever-changing.

And who can forget exploring Singapore’s very own Jewel Changi Airport, which is located at the Changi Airport itself? Free to enter for all visitors, this nature-themed entertainment and retail complex features a five-storey garden and the tallest indoor waterfall in the world, the Rain Vortex. Cascading 40 metres down to the basement, the Rain Vortex is a stunning piece of architecture that shouldn’t be missed when you’re in Singapore.

For the best experience, we recommend coming twice – once in the day to see the sunlight shine through and again at night, where the Rain Vortex is used for a Light & Music Showcase.

Kota Kinabalu, MALAYSIA

But what if we told you that you didn’t have to go too far for a stunning break with Firefly Airlines? Set much closer to home is the city of Kota Kinabalu, a beautiful capital that features idyllic seas and lush forests waiting to be explored. As the heart of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu is unmistakably known as the home to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia and the third-highest in the world at 4,095 metres above sea level.

Adrenaline lovers will thoroughly enjoy a hike to the peak of the mountain and be rewarded with a fantastic sight of lush greenery, though it’s good to note that the climb isn’t beginner-friendly. This excursion can typically take up to 3 days, but it is a fantastic way to highlight your visit to East Malaysia.

If you’d prefer a calmer experience that ends with a stunning view of the city skyline instead, then we’d recommend making your way to the Signal Hill Observatory Platform. Fitted with wooden stairs with an easier climb, the journey to the top will take you a mere 10 minutes and allows you to see Kota Kinabalu from a different light. While you’re here, don’t miss out on spotting the Atkinson Clock Tower, a historic tower built in 1902 to commemorate Francis George Atkinson, the first district officer of the city.

Of course, no visit to Kota Kinabalu should end without a visit to the islands across the city. While many tourists will often flock to Sapi Island for its energetic vibes, complete with beach barbecue and camping grounds, it’s Manukan Island that comes highly recommended by the locals of the city. As the second-largest island in Kota Kinabalu, you’ll find plenty of activities here, including snorkelling, diving, and other water sports made available.

To set yourself apart from the bustling areas of the island, you’ll want to get to the eastern part and enjoy the best of Manukan Island’s beaches. Each of these islands is a part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, with other noteworthy islands being Gaya Island, Mamutik Island, and Sulug Island. In fact, if you find yourself with a little extra time on hand, we’d recommend island hopping to see them all and discover your very own favourite beach experience.
