Put on your berets and get ready for a trip to France, because nestled 790 metres above sea level in Pahang is our very own French-themed village, the Colmar Tropicale. Opened in 2000, this resort attraction was inspired by the gorgeous town of Colmar, France, and is named after it. Several elements were also taken from its surrounding villages, including Riquewihr, Turckheim, and Kaysersberg.

Spanning more than 32 hectares of natural forestland, the architecture of Colmar Tropicale features styles mimicking French homes and shopping establishments. However, what many visitors may not know is that these buildings are in fact little clusters of accommodation, making Colmar Tropicale a fantastic family holiday destination for those looking to wake up to a unique view that will have you forgetting you’re still in Malaysia.

But don’t fret if you can’t stay, because Colmar Tropicale’s convenient location also makes it the perfect hidden gem for a day trip. So, whether you’re looking for a short escapade or have time to make new memories with your travel companions, Colmar Tropicale is a spot that won’t disappoint.

Plenty of restaurants can be found sprawled across the main resort areas, including buffet offerings and an authentic French establishment to complete your overseas experience. Colmar Tropicale also features fun activities for the whole family, such as a Rabbit Park and The Horse Trails, where horseback riding lessons are available. Adrenaline enthusiasts will also enjoy a day out at the Adventure Park, where the longest Flying Fox route in South East Asia calls home.

While a trip to the Maldives sits high as the dream holiday destination for many, there are often factors such as budget constraints or lack of time that make travelling to the island a hassle. Thankfully, you can also find what’s fondly known as the “Maldives of Malaysia” in no other than Semporna, a coastal town located on the island of Borneo in Sabah. The town’s name, which translates to “perfect”, is a reflection of what you can expect from this hidden gem – crystal clear turquoise waters, soft and white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and an escapade that will leave you wanting more.

Semporna’s beauty is one that captures attention from the moment you arrive, with aquatic enthusiasts looking to visit its variety of island offerings, including Sipadan Island and Mabul Island. It’s a favourite for world-class divers who can’t get enough of the sea, though a diving permit may be required for excursions from Sipadan Island. However, you shouldn’t let this stop you from heading into the waters, as the extra step ensures the rich marine life stays protected amid the growing tourism.

Back on land, you’ll find plenty of relaxing opportunities across Semporna that make this hidden gem a destination you cannot miss. Whether you’re basking in the sunlight from the balcony of your overwater resort or exploring the town for the best meals off the menu, Semporna is ever ready to give you that overseas experience right in the backyard of our home, Malaysia.

And did we mention you can now enjoy exclusive deals when flying to Tawau with Malaysia Airlines? But these seats won’t wait, and you shouldn’t either, so be sure to book your perfect family holiday to Semporna today!

Reconnect with the beauty of nature in Kundasang, Sabah

If you’re hungry for an escape away from the endless skyscrapers and city vibes, then why not visit Kundasang in Sabah? Likened to be the mini–New Zealand of Malaysia, Kundasang features rolling hills with cool weather and jaw-dropping views wherever you turn. The iconic Mount Kinabalu also serves as the backdrop to your visit here, making the settlement a true hidden gem that will satisfy your cravings for an unforgettable time in nature.

Many visitors love the Desa Dairy Farm, a local cattle farm that spans across 199 hectares of lush green fields. Holstein Friesian milking cows are often seen freely grazing across the farm, while family-friendly activities such as feeding calves with bottled milk, animal petting, and educational tours are also the norm here.

A small fee may be required to visit the Desa Dairy Farm, although much of the proceeds go back to the upkeep of the cattle farm and over 600 of its inhabitants. To complete your visit, we recommend indulging in the farm’s freshly made creamy gelato. The original flavour is a must-try and will leave you wanting more. Other dairy products, such as fresh milk and yoghurt, are also available if an ice-cold treat isn’t to your liking.

Furthermore, fans of the popular franchise, The Lord of the Rings, will find this hidden gem a bucket list destination. This is thanks to the 4 unique structures mimicking hobbit homes. According to its founders, they were inspired by the famed Hobbiton™ Movie Set Tours in New Zealand. Unlike the tourist attraction overseas that’s just for show, these homestays are in fact available for rent to couples and even larger groups of friends and families.

Fondly named the Humble Hobbit Home, these accommodations offer a majestic view of Mount Kinabalu straight from your balcony. This unique blend of foreign New Zealand vibes with Malaysian roots makes Kundasang the perfect family holiday spot, with new memories ready to be made amid the lush greenery.

Discover the gorgeous architecture of Morocco in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur

Astaka MoroccoPhoto by Malaysia Travel

As a country with a rich history that’s influenced by diverse cultures, Morocco has long been admired for its unique architectural styles. So, what if we told you that Morocco can be found just in our own backyard in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur?

Set within the Putrajaya Botanical Gardens, the Moroccan Pavilion is a gorgeous monument that opened in 2007. Known to locals as Astaka Morocco, this landmark pavilion is a symbol of cultural exchange and strong ties between Malaysia and Morocco. It was designed and built by skilled Moroccan craftsmen and builders with materials directly imported from Morocco. This ensured the authenticity of the structure, replicating those of a traditional riad or a Moroccan home, and visitors will feel like they’ve immediately been transported overseas.

Completed within 2 years, the structure features grand pillars and intricate carvings of Arabic calligraphy, geometric patterns, and arabesque designs. Colourful mosaic arrangements add to the charm of this hidden gem in Putrajaya, while the breathtaking landscaped gardens and lakeside views complete the view. The pavilion’s carved wooden doors, wall panels, and furniture bring forth a hint of cedarwood aroma as you stroll through the building, successfully highlighting the blend of Moroccan cultures with Islamic heritage.

Do note that visiting the Moroccan Pavilion requires a paid entry ticket, but we think it’s well worth the visit for a unique family holiday experience. This can be purchased at the Putrajaya Botanical Gardens’ Visitor Centre, and discounted fares for students are available.

Take a hike to see Tasik Biru Kangkar Pulai in Johor Bahru

Tasik BiruPicture this: You’ve just taken a short hike on an early day, and you’re now rewarded with the stunning views of a glistening lake with a gorgeous blue hue. No, we’re not talking about the Blue Lake in southern Croatia – this is Tasik Biru Kangkar Pulai, which is located in Johor Bahru.

Set just 15 minutes away from Johor Premium Outlets, this beautifully scenic lake is the result of an abandoned mine that’s filled with water. The water that comes in contact with minerals such as limestone powder and calcium carbonate then creates this teal-like phenomenon, making this hidden gem a must-see for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. However, it’s important to note that Tasik Biru Kangkar Pulai isn’t safe for swimming as it remains an active quarry. Instead, visitors are welcome to marvel at the lake from the main viewpoint, as it’s where you’ll get the best experience of the lake after all.

Although reaching Tasik Biru Kangkar Pulai can be tricky, the tip is to always follow the marked trails that will lead you the right way. There are numerous routes you can take with differing difficulties, but most of them are doable as long as you have hike-appropriate shoes. As the journey in the middle of the day can often be hot, we recommend starting your excursion early in the morning or towards late afternoon. If you’re lucky enough to hike on a clear day, you may even see the reflection of the surrounding limestone formation in the lake, so planning ahead will definitely help.

Explore a touch of Europe everywhere you walk in Penang

Last but definitely not least, who could forget a walk down Armenian Street in Georgetown, Penang, that retains an unmistakable European vibe? With historic buildings that date back to the end of the 19th century, these age-old colonial architectures that have been meticulously preserved with a touch of local charm are a must-see for tourists and locals alike. Most establishments now house artisanal shops and Instagram-worthy cafés, with many of them retaining that vintage look following light renovations.

To make your Penang visit even more memorable, we recommend staying the night at the Eythrope Boutique Villa, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Nestled in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Penang Hill, the 5-bedroom villa was built in the 1920s with a gorgeous British Colonial exterior. Inside, high ceilings and wooden floors adorn the freshly refurbished home, seamlessly blending modern architecture with classic touches reminiscent of Tudor-style cottages.

Often regarded as a tranquil escape, the Eythrope Boutique Villa offers breathtaking bird’s eye views over Georgetown. Come sundown, families can rest and relax among the stars at the summit of Penang Hill, a rare excursion that can only be experienced when you’re away from the bustling cityscape. Guests can then wake up to the fresh air of the mountains the next day and tuck into the complimentary breakfasts, or simply ride the Penang Hill funicular down the foot of the hill in search of Penang’s best bites.
